Du`a’ (supplication) is an incredible power that we sometimes don’t fully comprehend. The importance of dua in Islam stands close to having faith and belief in the existence of Allah (SWT). Dua means communicating with Allah (SWT) and because of this communication source, we get close to our Lord.

Du’a’ is a form of prayer that is not restricted to time or place. In literal terms, dua is the weapon with the help of which one can change almost any situation by asking for help from Almighty Allah (SWT). Dua is strongly believed to change destiny. Dua is essentially submission to the Creator and a demonstration of a person’s need for Allah (SWT).

Acceptance of Du’a’… Sometimes our du’a’s get answered and accepted immediately and sometimes the acceptance is delayed. Either case, the belief stays – all our du’a’s are answered as per HIS (SWT) planning and decision. But in order to get the answers and to understand the answers, we must ffirst understand the dynamics behind du`a’:

First of all,

  • We must keep the certainty (yaqeen) that Allah Subhanahu wa ta`ala (Glorified and Exalted is He) will answer our prayer. There should absolutely be no doubts for acceptance.
  • We must also be careful to not lose hope in our du`a’ or become impatient when the results get delayed.
  • We should remind ourselves that getting our du`a’s answered requires persistence and a strong desire.

And lastly,

  • We must make sure that there is no sin of ours that we committed and haven’t repented sincerely from, which is holding back the acceptance of our dua.

Allah (SWT) The Almighty says in the Holy Quran, “When my servants ask you concerning me, (tell them) I am indeed close (to them). I listen to the prayer of every suppliant when he calls on me.” (Quran, 2:186)

Importance of Dua in Islam

Dua is a form of Worship

Our beloved Prophet (SAW) said: “The most excellent worship is Dua.” (Sahih Al-Jami)

The Importance of Du’a’ in Islam – A Momin’s Faith

Dua is a form of Worship

Our beloved Prophet (SAW) said: “The most excellent worship is Dua.” (Sahih Al-Jami)

Dua is a form of worship, in fact, our Holy Prophet (PBUH) said it is the best form of worship. When we make Dua in front of ALLAH (SWT) for our needs and wants, not only does HE answer but also rewards us. With Dua we never fail; without it, we may never succeed.

Strength and Power of Dua in Islam

Dua is a way to communicate with Allah (SWT), our Creator, the All-Knowing, and the All-Powerful. This act of making a Dua in itself is of exceptional significance. It is the most, liberating, empowering, and transforming conversation a person can ever have with his Lord.

The Importance of Du’a’ in Islam – A Momin’s Faith

Prophet (SAW) said: “A slave becomes nearest to his Lord when he is in prostration. So, increase supplications in prostrations.” (Sahih Muslim).

Throughout the Quran, Allah (SWT) has encouraged us to call upon Him. He asks us to lay our dreams, hopes, fears, and uncertainties before Him and to be sure that He hears every word.

Allah (SWT) says in Quran: “And your Lord says, Call on Me; I will answer your (prayer). But those who are too arrogant to worship Me will surely find themselves in Hell, in humiliation.” (Quran, 40:60).

Our intention while making Dua must be to please Allah (SWT), to obey and trust Him completely. In every difficulty, our first action is Dua, as is our last. We ask Allah to show us the way to handle the difficulty; we seek His help in following the path He shows to us; we seek His aid in making our efforts successful.

Dua in Islam is the belief Allah (SWT) is the sole provider and creator of everything on earth. So, through Dua, whether we make dua after wudu, dua after prayer, dua after adhan, it will hold the same strength.

We should make Dua at all times, not only during times of distress or dua after namaz and dua after azan. The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: “Whosoever desires that Allah answers his Duas in unfavorable and difficult conditions, he should make plentiful Dua in days of ease and comfort.

Our Dua should not be for ourselves but also for our parents, brothers and sisters, spouses and children, relatives and friends, and most importantly struggling Muslims everywhere.

Holy Prophet (SAW) said: “The Dua of a Muslim for his brother (in Islam) in his absence is readily accepted. An angel is appointed to his side. Whenever he makes a beneficial Dua for his brother the appointed angel says, ‘Ameen. And may you also be blessed with the same.” (Sahih Muslim)

Benefits of Making Dua

There are many benefits for making Dua in Islam. Those that Allah himself promises are listed below:

Removal of Arrogance… When we make Dua we submit to Allah (SWT) that He alone is the creator and He is The Most Powerful one and everything is under His control. Our existence is nothing and we have to ask from Him.

Acceptance of Dua… There is either the option that the Dua will be accepted later on in this life or in the Hereafter, or the option that the Dua will be answered/accepted through some other means. Holy Prophet (SAW) said about it:

Whoever does Dua to Allah, Allah fulfills his seeking or in exchange averts misfortune until the Dua is not related to sin or breaking some relation.” (Tirmidhi).

So, if immediate acceptance is not there, do not despair because either it will help you against some misfortune in future or has reward for you in the future life.

Dua changes Destiny… Prophet (SAW) said, “Dua turns away destiny and good deeds lengthen age.” (Tirmidhi)

Dua opens the doors of Mercy- Holy Prophet (SAW) said, “For whoever the door of Dua opened, for him the doors of mercy are opened.” (Tirmidhi)
